AEO for Crypto in 2026: How to Get Cited by AI Answers

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of getting your page cited inside an AI-generated answer rather than ranked below it. In crypto it has already overtaken ranking as the thing that decides whether a page earns clicks. When Bing or Copilot answers a query directly, the citation panel takes the traffic and the organic result below it collects very little, regardless of its position.

We measured this on our own pages. Two guides on comparable positions differed by a factor of four in click-through rate, and pages cited inside the AI answer earned roughly three times the click-through rate of pages that were not. Position explained almost none of the gap. Citation explained nearly all of it.

Why does AEO matter more in crypto than elsewhere?

Because crypto queries are disproportionately definitional and comparative, and those are exactly the queries answer engines take over first. “What is X”, “how do you do Y”, “which platform is better” all resolve into a generated summary. A crypto project competing on those terms is competing for a citation slot, not for position three.

The second reason is that crypto information decays fast, so answer engines lean on sources that carry recent, specific, attributable claims. A page written in general terms has nothing for the model to quote, and a page whose numbers are two years old gets passed over for one whose numbers are current.

What gets a page cited?

Sentences that carry a specific, attributable fact. Watching which competitors get cited on queries where we do not, the pattern is consistent: the quoted lines contain a number, a date, a named entity or a measured outcome, and they are written so the sentence stands alone without the paragraph around it.

Gets citedRarely cited
A named figure with a period attachedA general claim with no number
A first-hand measurement the author can stand behindA restatement of what other articles say
A comparison with the values shownA comparison described in adjectives
A dated fact that is currently trueA statistic without a source or a year
A self-contained sentenceA claim that only makes sense in context

How do you write for citation?

  • Lead with the answer, not the setup. The first sentence should answer the query outright, because that is the part an engine lifts.
  • Put a number in the opening of every major section. A section that opens with a generality gives the model nothing to quote.
  • Date every figure. An undated number is unusable to an engine deciding what is current, and it rots silently on your own site.
  • Publish something only you know. First-party measurement is the one category of fact that cannot be sourced from a competitor.
  • Write self-contained sentences. If a claim needs the previous two sentences to make sense, it will not survive extraction.
  • Do not pad with transitions. Filler between claims lowers the density of quotable material without adding meaning.

How do you measure whether AEO is working?

Not with rank tracking, which will tell you the page is doing fine while it earns nothing. The signals that matter are whether your domain appears in the citation panel for your target queries, whether click-through rate moves independently of position, and whether the gap between impressions and clicks widens on queries that have started producing AI answers.

The practical method is manual and cheap: run your twenty most valuable queries, screenshot the result, and record whether an AI answer appeared and who it cited. Repeat monthly. Automated tools read the underlying markup and frequently miss the answer block entirely, so the screenshot is the reliable record.

Does traditional SEO still matter?

Yes, because a page that does not rank will not be cited either. Answer engines draw their citations largely from pages that already rank on the query, so ranking has become the entry requirement rather than the objective. The work has not been replaced, it has been extended: rank first, then make the page worth quoting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of getting a page cited inside an AI-generated answer rather than merely ranked beneath it. In crypto search it now explains more of the variation in clicks than ranking position does.

Is AEO different from SEO?

It extends SEO rather than replacing it. Answer engines mostly cite pages that already rank, so ranking remains the entry requirement. The additional work is making the page quotable: specific, dated, self-contained claims.

Why did my traffic fall while my rankings stayed the same?

Most likely an AI answer now occupies the first screen on your queries and cites someone else. Position is measured against organic results, which sit below that answer, so the ranking report looks unchanged while the clicks go elsewhere.

How do I know if my page is being cited?

Run your key queries manually and record whether an AI answer appears and which domains it cites. Automated rank tools frequently miss the answer block, so a monthly screenshot log is more reliable than a dashboard.
